01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Even before it touches the grill, the sheer presence of the skirt steak commands attention, sliced into generous, steak-like portions. Tucked away in a residential quarter of Higashi-Koiwa, Kongoen has gained a following for an unusual serving style: pairing its richly seasoned meats not with heavier dips, but with a small saucer of vinegar. Dipping the freshly grilled skirt steak into the vinegar cuts through the rendered fat, sharpening the beef's rich savory flavor and supple chew.
Served in a structured course format, the cuts arrive in generous portions. After an opening plate of tongue with contrasting textures, a wide array of offal appears presented in a wooden tub. Meticulously cleaned cuts—including premium mountain chain tripe, heart, uterus, and melt-in-the-mouth liver—reveal crisp textures and distinct natural sweetness. In between, bites of bean sprout namul, kimchi, and cucumber provide welcome refreshment against the rich meats.
Sauce-Drenched Cuts and Steaming Rice for the Climax
The later stretch of the meal brings marinated loin and kalbi saturated in a deep, savory tare sauce. Steaming white rice is indispensable here: resting a charred slice over the bowl before taking a bite delivers the quintessential thrill of old-school neighborhood yakiniku. With cold beer or highballs in hand, it is an unapologetically hands-on meal around a classic tabletop gas roaster, where clothes are bound to catch the savory grill smoke.
The restaurant operates only in the evening under a strict reservation-only system, catering to one group at a time with dedicated hospitality. Because it sits some distance from the nearest station, JR Koiwa, taking a taxi from the station front makes arrival straightforward.
